Map the sources that already exist
Start with sources the team knows or that appear in verified responses and enquiries. Record the URL, business fact, author or owner, check date and available correction route. A page appearing in ordinary search does not prove that a particular AI used it for a particular response. Identify the evidence for putting a source on the list.
Separate owned profiles, partner materials, editorial publications and reviews. Check company identity, service scope, markets and conditions. If information is outdated, prepare a substantiated correction request. You can edit an owned profile where authorized; an external publication requires its owner's decision.
| Source type | Check | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Controlled profile | Identity, services, contacts and editing rights | Self-written copy is independent evidence |
| Partner material | The actual relationship and approved facts | A partner substantiates every claimed advantage |
| Editorial publication | Author, supporting sources and placement type | Payment gives control over an AI response |
| Review | Provenance, permission and accurate context | Invented copy counts as customer experience |
Which material is useful to the reader
Identify a specific topic and a fact the company can substantiate. This might be a process explanation, a verifiable work example, a specialist comment or actual service-selection conditions. The material should fit the publication's audience and be understandable without an undisclosed advertising arrangement. Do not add exaggerated conclusions simply to insert the brand name.
The same paragraph distributed across many sites does not become independent evidence. Google's current AI guidance warns against inauthentic mentions and emphasizes useful original content. For a publication plan, check what readers learn from each material and which source supports its important statements.
- The topic fits the publisher's audience.
- Facts have supporting sources and verification owners.
- Work examples are permitted and accurately labelled.
- Readers can understand the material's provenance.

How to distinguish earned and paid coverage
Establish the publication type before approval: owned material, partner collaboration, independent editorial coverage or paid placement. A paid article can be useful when its content is accurate and appropriately disclosed. An author name or a familiar domain does not turn it into an independent review.
Google calls for appropriate qualification of paid links; buying links to influence rankings falls under link spam. Agree the conditions with the editor or publisher. Do not ask them to disguise advertising or introduce fabricated experience. The verification concerns truthful content and clear conditions rather than a promised weight in an AI system.

What the acceptance criteria should include
Record the agreed publisher, topic, sources, public version, placement type, URL and correction terms for each publication. If authorship, a link or a defined availability period is required, agree it explicitly. Do not treat those conditions as included solely because a proposal is called link building or GEO.
Once published, open the actual page and compare it with the approved version. Check links, facts and disclosure. Preserve the publication evidence and unresolved questions. The table below is an acceptance template, not a report from an executed campaign or a promised customer outcome.
| Field | Verification criterion |
|---|---|
| Content | Statements match the approved factual sources |
| Provenance | Author and placement type do not mislead readers |
| Link | Points to the agreed page with appropriate qualification |
| Correction | A clear contact and agreed procedure exist |
| Evidence | Actual URL, date and publication status are recorded |
How to agree external-content expenses
The current UPLIFY GEO offer bills external placements and link building separately from the base package. A strategy may specify topics and source types without including an editorial publication fee. Before payment, clarify writing, approval, editorial changes, placement itself and support for corrections.
Do not compare proposals only by link counts or a unit price. The material's subject, audience fit, factual substantiation and agreed conditions matter. Do not promise a fixed number of ChatGPT recommendations from paid mentions. A placement team cannot control that outcome; the quote should describe work that can actually be accepted.

How to track later observations
When checking whether a publication appears in AI responses, preserve the exact query, platform, mode, language, market, date and response sources. Distinguish a simple mention from a link supporting a specific statement. A URL appearing does not establish the publication's causal contribution to sales. Absence in a sample does not establish that the material is never used under other conditions.
Assess actual publisher referrals and enquiries separately where their source can be identified. Compare agreed periods and retain known limitations. If an AI repeats an outdated external fact, return to the correction log and publication owner. That creates a more useful task than increasing the number of identical texts.
Where to start
Start external-mention GEO work with a source map, substantiated facts and publication terms. Accept materials by their content and provenance, and assess later mentions, referrals and enquiries separately. The current UPLIFY offer explains base-work boundaries and the separate link-building budget; use the SEO/GEO audit to diagnose conflicting information.
Questions about external mentions for GEO
Does publication on a well-known website guarantee a ChatGPT mention?
No. An agreed publication establishes that the material appeared; it does not control the next ChatGPT answer. Check content, provenance and placement terms, and observe AI responses under a separate protocol. Even a citation needs comparison with the statement it supposedly supports. A recognizable domain or a payment alone does not establish an accurate recommendation or a commercial outcome for the business.
Can an owned profile count as independent substantiation?
No. A company-controlled profile has its own provenance and is not an independent review. It can provide useful current facts when the team maintains them correctly. Independent substantiation needs clear authorship, sources and disclosure of the relationship with the company. Preserve these distinctions in the source map so self-written copy is not presented as customer experience or another publisher's editorial conclusion.
What should we do about an outdated external article?
Locate the specific inaccurate fact and prepare verifiable evidence of the current information. Where you can edit a profile, approve changes with the fact owner. For another publisher's article, contact its author or editor; the decision belongs to them. Record the response and request status. Do not create fabricated mentions to conceal the problem or promise that source correction automatically changes every AI answer.
